Revolution in the display: the first plastic display for surgeons and the blind

How does it work

The display is composed of those thousands of small drops of hydrogel, which form individual pixels. Hydrogel is a precious material from which, for example, contact eyelets are made.

Scientists drank that some mixtures of hydrogels can respond to various stimuli and change their properties. The type of hydrogel used “dries out” during heating, ie the loss of water content and thus the volume. At temperatures up to 29 ° C it is relatively stable, at a temperature of 35 ° C loss and 90% by volume. If you stop warming it, it quickly absorbs water from the bottom layer and increases again. The bottom layer is actively cooled with water so that it does not start to heat up over time.

According to vdc, the points not only change after hardening, but also harden due to water loss. Bn is a hydrogel very soft and pliable material, so the contours must be displayed to the touch, especially as a tool for blind eyes.

The dot on the display is relatively small, only 0.5 mm. Minimum point height after 0.28 mm. As a result, the surgeon perceives the tactile sensation together with the visual image from the cameras, the blind, relying only on the tactile, needs a bag of large shapes not high resolution.

“It is finely spaced for the blind to make the tactile impression pleasant. However, the stated maximum point height of 0.5 mm is, in my opinion, insufficient, ”for the blind Patrik Pospil, the development of a special communication program for the blind designed for smartphones with the Windows Mobile operating system.

The height of only half a millimeter is very limiting. If a large enough pattern is not available to the blind, the high resolution of an otherwise small display is over. On the other hand, the doctor can display a high-resolution throw, or even when reading, even small details can be displayed.

“Such a display could show you the relief of a car, a house, a new mobile phone, a map drawing, but in such a case it would be very appropriate for its size to be comparable to the size of standard monitors. I would see this technology as an alternative to a braille display that uses piezoelectric elements. The maximum point height will have to be in t, ”adds Pospil.

How does the display turn on?

The display needs a beam of light accurate enough to find a 300 x 300 micrometer dot. However, they used a halogen scale with precise optics from a standard projector for this purpose. Operate it in such a way that the beam overdraws the individual pixels and, with the power of the equation, reflects each drop of hydrogel separately. The advantage is that it works, the disadvantage is the high consumption of system cells.
